Planting out runner beans... i'm taking a chance!

Hi All,

what a brilliant forum this is!

maybe i started too eager and early but my runner beans are taking over my 3 tier greenhouse to the point they are damaging themselves.



my theory is i'm going to take the chance and plant them out if they fail i have smaller back ups in the green house.

i'm in the south so the majority of the frost has past (apart from the minor one last week)

what have i got to lose? few runner bean plants or i could end up with a early crop bounty!

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum! Your beans look great - I'm still waiting for mine to germinate! As you say, plenty for time to sow/grow more if the worst happens. I'm hoping the worst is over now too

I sowed my beans indoors last weekend and they are just coming up.
I've found that whenever I sow them, early or late, they still don't start to crop until late August/September time, so I've given up on early sowings. The flowers need a night-time temperature of 10C or less to set, so generally in midsummer the nights are too warm and the flowers drop off.

I've not sown mine yet so (hopefully) there is still time to sow. Previously I've sown some in situ after the last frost and they caught up and still produced well.

Hi Peter and welcome to the vine. My lotty neighbour always puts his out early, sometimes in hail and sleet but he nearly always gets away with it.

Welcome Peter. Last year I put my runner beans out about this time but wrapped them in fleece in the evening if it was set to be cold. They all survived

I haven't even sown mine this year but I shall get around to it soon.

well here they are! 8 willing victims of the cold, still got another 6 in the mini green house just incase.

Do you have any fleece to protect your runners or even some plastic both would help with the night time temps.

Planted my first ones out today as I've got lots of others coming along in modules - they were 2 to 3 inches with 4 or 5 leaves fo the most part. They live or die now...

Its a lot cooler where I live highest night time GH temps up to yet's been around 7c in the past week I've had 0.8c so nothing tender of mine is going out yet.

Blimey, I haven't sown my runners yet! Last year I sowed direct on 29th May. This post has got me thinking though! I'm going to sow some tomorrow in root trainers so they can be planted out in a few weeks then at the same time as planting those out I will sow the rest direct.

I am also down South, mine haven't been sown yet, so you have plenty of time if needed to sow some more.
