I remember at 20 years old my OH telling me she was pregnant with our first child. I was standing in the porch of our new house at the time, side shooting my tomato plants.

Anyway, welcome John - sounds like you've already been bitten by the bug. You'll be knee deep in seed packets and labels before you know it!

Don't worry John, I joined when I was 20. Getting a garden is a really big motivation to getting into gardening, I think it's not as popular with people our age because of the lack of accesible green space. In the garden I'd grown up with, I think the level of gardening I did ended with pushing some currant trimmings into the soil that my mum got from a friend at work. It wasn't until we moved that I kind of.. "claimed" the garden. If people could get access to gardens I think it wouldn't be as "uncool"

But it's very relaxing (until you're tucked up in bed and then suddenly remember you didn't close your greenhouse door)

Maybe a bit of a wild one but have to suggest it... Don't know what you're doing for a living but the horticultural industry is crying out for talented, enthusiastic people. There are lots of paid training schemes available if you really get the bug, anything from nurseries to training in historical or botanical gardens. I changed career via a scheme called WRAGS where you get paid to learn under a head gardener in very nice gardens. It was blisfull turning my back to stuffy offices- working with plants is creative, healthy and in demand so a half decent salary can be earned- and the industry is full of genuinely nice, interested people! Just a thought...

thanks for the replies guys and girls, i am in hertfordshire uk, i am not getting emails about replies how do i set this up, thats why i have been slow to reply, i think you an grow olives over here under the right conditions so im gonna make it my new hobby! really excited have done loads of research! anybody else here grow olive trees?

I have an olive tree that's about 6' tall and has been here for 12 years. It was a few feet tall when I was given it. The bad news is - its only had a few tiny olives.

It's worth trying John, this year I'm going to be trying out flat peaches (outside) and Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis (half inside half outside)

Welcome John and Girlfriend. I'm 28 and have been called sad and old before my time. but it's something I truly enjoy doing. My wife was sceptical at first when I said about growing veg and some flowers. But she's well into it now too and tries to help / interfere where she can.

I don't have a big green house, I have a small heated propagator and a stand alone greenhouse outside. I am growing Lettuce, Rocket, Parsley, Beetroot, Spring onion, Carrots in a trug and Strawberries & Tomatoes in pots. in a relatively small garden. Just waiting for my allotment application to be accepted

Good luck with what you intend to grow. eating produce that you remember opening the seed packet too is a great feeling.

Hi John and girlfriend and welcome. What I did when I first got the bug was start a list of everything that we liked eating that could be home grown. Then we just started with the easy to grow ones until we got more confident and built up some materials and skills. You never stop learning.
