  • Where do you germinate seeds in the summer?

Seems like a dim question, but I'm wondering what you all do in the summer. I want to sow some seeds in modules (chard, kale, basil, dill, more lettuce etc etc) and it's so hot! In spring, I'm lucky to have a greenhouse, but that is way too hot now and full of plants. I tried germinating in the garage then bringing them out but the seedlings are both leggy and frazzled.

What about a mini greenhouse by a West or East facing hedge so the seeds get some but not loads of sunshine? Would that still be too hot?

There's also direct sowing, but the slugs would do their worst and there'd be nothing left!

    Thank you!

    Hi and welcome
I start my seeds in the kitchen as they don't need light until they're germinated. After that. it depends on what seeds they are. Some I leave outside on a table (just keep an eye that they don't get too wet when it rains). I also have a shady lean to greenhouse that loses the sun early afternoon - some seedlings go there if they need a bit of protection.

I'm lucky that my space saver greenhouse is only in sun until about 10:30 - 11:00 then its in the shade of the tree until about 3:30 so the most harsh time of the day it's in the shade so I get away with germinating in my space saver.

Welcome to the Vine Heynonnyno. I germinate in modules on the greenhouse floor where they're in shade for most of the day. The greenhouse door is open.
As soon as the seedlings are looking strong enough they usually go out into a netted area to protect them from birds.

Thank you all for your replies. I might try all of the suggested approaches and see if I can get any to work.
