  • Peas is it too late to sow more?

    Hi,

I'm a first time allotmenteer this season and still finding my way.

I sowed some Kelvedon Wonder peas some time ago and they were coming along nicely, ready for picking a week before I commenced a 14 day holiday. We've now returned and the peas are past their best, like bullets in fact!

Is it too late to sow another lot of Kelevedon Wonder peas and get a crop before the onset of winter?

    Many thanks,

    Paul

Peas are not really considered a hot weather crop, but if you have the seeds and the space there is nothing to loose. I put some in 10 days ago and they have germinated so anything that crops is a bonus.

I get two crops of KW most years, but I sow the second crop in June and it is never really as good as the first. Then again I see any amount of fresh garden peas as a bonus.

        Hi Paul,
leave the Kelvedon Wonders you have to ripen in the pods preferably on the plant, you can use them as seed for next year, as long as you get them dry and keep them cool - save them in a paper envelope or bag when the pods split.

If you want to sow more peas now, it would be best to go for an early variety, because they take less time from sowing before being ready to eat.

And of course KW are a recommended early variety.

Thank you for all of the responses.

I did think about letting the existing pods go to seed, but then I decided to uncover them and let the pigeons have a feed!

I'm going to throw a load more KW in at the weekend. You don't know unless you try!

            Thanks again,
            Paul

You can always consider them to be green manure, that way if you get something it's a bonus. I did that with my broad beans last year and got a better crop than ever.
