Can I transplant small bay tree into larger container late November?
Can I transplant small bay tree into larger container late November?
I have a 12 inch bay tree that has been in a small pot in the garden for the past five years or so - still living so guess it's hardy - Is it to late in the year and too cold to move into bigger pot?
Yes, provided the container is :-
a) put somewhere protected, like an unheated greenhouse
b) not too much bigger than the current one (no plant like to be swamped)
I like the piece of advice that the best time to do something is when you have time to do it. Traditionally evergreens are supposed to be potted on in spring but if you don't have time then or if it's looking good particularly sad at the moment I'd be inclined to pot it on now. My bay tree is just about to take a trip to the garage for winter so I would recommend moving yours somewhere frost free for winter especially if you're going to pot it up.
