lettuce noob

hi all ,this year im going to try and have one of my beds (1 meter x 3 meters) with lettuces
im hoping that if i trim them and do cut and come again then i will be able to have fresh salad leafs for the spring and summer ,i have 2 packs of headed lettuce and 1 mixed salad leaves ,i have all the trays i need and this year a greenhouse ,i was thinking of starting about 300 seeds in the unheated greenhouse but the question is when to start them in the green house also as we have a large slug population (i dont like killing them ,i just throw them as far as i can ) how many do you think i would lose to slugs ? 1/4 of the new seedlings ? any thoughts welcome ,cheers

Mine are in the GH now I sow some every 4 weeks. In the beds on the right of the GHs and in some of the pots on the left. I just scatter the seeds and let them get on with it. Most of these were sown in October/November & the photos taken in December.

you need some sort of medieval siege weapon inspired contraption to move the slugs far enough way that they won't return...

Don't plant all 300 seeds at the same time.

I reckon I tend to lose about 15% - 20% to slugs - bit of a guestimate...

I sowed lettuce seed straight outside & wasn't bothered by slugs or snails but it might be because of the French marigold row next to them. Marigolds everywhere helps

ok great thanks everyone , ill start of with a few trays and then do a tray every few weeks till i get what i need ,cheers for the pics vc and yes maybe a slug trebuchet will be built in the future ,cheers
