This was where I brought my next lot from - but as its yet to arrive and I've yet to plant it out and harvest it, can't really comment

Tesco's blue and white economy section!

Five bulbs for under a quid, giving 55 cloves to plant! Did a trial last year and shop bought garlic performed better than garden centre named variety! Could have been a one off I suppose, but doubt it?

I'll give you three guesses where I've got mine from!

After wasting £1.50 at Wilkinson's on five elephant garlic cloves I'll be following your lead Snadger. It's not the cost that's annoying but the wasted time and effort and then watching them die off

New to the fun of having an allotment i've never tried to grow garlic before but, as i'm going to start off with lots of empty beds this autumn, i would like to give it a try. From you lot it sounds like buying a couple of bulbs from tesco is ok.

Is it quite easy to grow?
Will I be able to plant it once my beds are ready?
Does it need any special treatment?

Wow, I thought that like potatoes - you should only buy certified disease-free stuff, but hey, if it works....

I hate Tescos with a passion - just something about the place, so I'll be visiting Sainsbury's at the weekend (or am I a bit previous?).

p.s. I hate ASDA too, I just feel tense as soon as I walk in those places.

A money tree, now there's an idea.

Brings me back to an earlier phrase I think I uttered on here: "If money doesn't grow on trees, why do banks have branches?"...

I hate using the supermarkets too, but that's quite some difference in price, 15p from Tesco to around 88p each bulb buying in named garlic from seed companies.
But if it works, I shall just grit my teeth and go and buy some, although (light bulb goes on) could go and buy some from our indie greengrocer.
When's the best time to plant it?
                        best wishes

They do reckon that garlic needs a spell of cold weather after planting, so I would think planting late September/October would be OK. The idea is that it puts roots down while the soil is warmish, then sits there through the winter and when spring comes along it bursts into life. I still have to prove this theory by getting results, but I do know from other grapes that it can work. GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE!

I bought 5 bulbs from River Nene and planted the leftovers that started to sprout. They did well last year!
