I twisted the top off my pineapple, planted it in some compost and placed in a sunny window. Hoping to get some roots forming over the next month or so.

Also scraped out and washed the papaya seeds. I discarded the ones that floated. They are now drying, hopefully to be planted later this week (if the snow is light enough for me to retrieve some compost from outside - I'm having to reuse what I had last year, and take my chances with diseases etc.)

The ginger rhizome is soaking in some water, ready to stick in a pot tomorrow.

I will let you know if any of them come to anything, or if they all end in miserable failure!

My first experiments in sowing things as an adult were with trying to germinate seeds from foods I had eaten (I had the most success with a dragonfruit - still going strong 11 or so years later!) so I'm enjoying this

(As an aside, I stirred my pitiful box of "compost" from last year a couple of weeks ago and pulled out a couple of sprouted stone fruits - probably peaches or nectarines. I stuck them in a pot and will see what happens...)

My first attempt at a pineapple hasn't gone so well. Fortunately, I had already bought another pineapple, or I would have been more disheartened to find my pineapple top rotting. This time, I am going to try cutting off everything below the roots and not believe the people who say not to bother as a soggy stump won't cause badness!

Pineapple the Second is already looking more promising. It actually has some real roots hiding under the leaves, rather than the stubs that Failed Pineapple had. I've twisted the top off, removed leaves above the roots, trimmed the stem back and put the whole thing upside down so the stump can dry a bit.

No success with the pineapples so far, but look at my ginger!
