  • advice if bringing a pot-plant from last year back inside

I am a bit of a hoarder and plants which flowered in pots usually get put out in the garden somewhere over winter if they are frost tolerant, to be potentially enjoyed again in the following year. I just recovered one of these which has hyacinth bulbs in it, so a few "Do's and Dont's" for anyone in the same boat.

Do knock the plant out of its pot and have a good look at the compost/roots. Once you've found which are the roots of your plant, everything else in there is likely to be a weed and should be removed. Also check for any nasties like slugs or larvae (Caterpillar looking things) and get rid of those too - obviously all this is best done outside.

Do put some fresh compost in the bottom of the pot, put your plant back and then add some more compost on top. If its a hungry type thing you can mix in some blood, fish and bone at this stage.

Do give the whole thing a good soak in a bucket of water for an hour or so, if it has been somewhere dry.

Don't put the pot when you bring it back in near anything-else - obviously you will have tried to get rid of pests but it isn't worth letting a large slug or whatever have an easy ride to then dine out on your seedlings.
