Overcrowding - similar to my cauliflowers!

Evening all,

so I obviously used the same scatter happy sowing method with all my seeds therefore we now have what I think is about to be overcrowding of tomatoes, coriander, i've put pics on of those and there are shoots coming through with what I suspect is also too many per pot of leek and onion!

So, you wonderful grapes gave me advise of either snipping some or transplanting into more pots with the cauls's, I decided to try that just so i could see if it works, I did it last night and so far so good...some of them look a little worse for wear as expected but for a first go maybe not too bad? I've put a pic on of those too...

So, with the tomatoes / coriander, is it the same principal and if so when? Or is there something else i should do (apart from learn to sow 1 or 2 seeds per pot as opposed to sprinkling them like hundreds & thousands on my ice cream!

If you are sowing old seed, you need to put a few more in to allow for lower/more variable germination rates.
For the toms I would either snip out the excess, or transplan them into different pots, depending how many plants yo have room for once they get big
I don’t know when exactly is best, but I personally would try to do as soon as possible as their roots get tangled together once they get a bit bigger.

For onions, if there are only a few per pot, it is supposed to be possible to plant them out in clusters. Aparently they push each other away as they grow. Not tried it with proper onions, but my spring onions were quite happy in clusters last year!

I agree with Chestnut on the toms - get the seedlings separated and in to their own pots asap - if you have any trouble getting the roots apart a small bowl of water to wash away some of the compost once you have them our of the cells should do the trick. Be careful to hold them just by the leaves, the stems are v delicate at this stage.

I don't know that I'd bother to do anything on the coriander apart from moving the bunches of seedlings in to larger pots as they get bigger. All sizes of herbs can be used in cooking, so just thin them out in rotation as you want some to flavour a dish .

Your caulis look to be doing OK BTW, so I reckon you cracked that one - be careful not to get the compost too wet and you'll certainly have some bigger plants to move on in a few weeks time.

The toms I won't now get a chance to do until Thursday evening but I will crack on with that

Ah I'll need to watch with the watering, i think at first I wasn't watering enough and now i'm probably too much so need to find a balance!
