  • Swede flowering already!!!!

Hi all, newbie here. I planted some module grown swedes couple of weeks ago and today I have seen that a couple are flowering! Do I have to scrap them?? 😢

Yes, they won't be any use for eating and you obviously wouldn't want to save seeds from plants that bolted so early. Best to start again with seeds. It's not too late. In fact the ones you have now were probably sown too early. The RHS site says "Sow from early May in the north to mid June in the south."

I dont even contemplate sowing swedes until June precisely because of the bolting. IMO the best place for those that have bolted is the compost bin.

I was a newbie myself last year and I did the same - mine all bolted too, although not as early as yours.

When I was looking up about it I found that, far from being available in the garden centre as established plants in March they shouldn't have even been sown until June or thereabouts.

I did get a little usable crop off them, but most of the roots were woody as heck. I got more edible crop off the three that I sowed in a tub of compost in June and harvested in January than I did off the 20 plants I'd bought the previous March.

As an aside, in case any other plants in the garden centres attract your attention, don't bother with parsnips. As I found, they do not like being transplanted at all - I've never seen such cats cradles of roots as I got
I believe that carrots are similar.

Thank you all. Worse thing is they were the healthiest looking! Oh well, I've never grown swede before so it's a learning curve!

              Read the packet
              Read it again
Then google to check the pack is correct FOR YOUR AREA

there’ll be a date range, eg sow Feb-April. Feb is for perfect climate... April might be more realistic if you’re cold
