Jay-ell if you leave them in permanently, do they increase in size, and dont they go to seed?
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

If you leave them in the ground they will grow as normal, giant garlic always send up a flower spike...but often because they don’t have much space they aren’t that big. I occasionally end up leaving a few behind and letting them get on with it!
Do you grow elephant garlic Rary?

Rary, I'll dig up some of them and move them out so they have space to grow. Yes they do flower but you can also shave them if you so desire.

You can replant them and you'll get very big bulbs next year!

Those that haven't split for me have produced fabulously the following year.

                Ok an update.

I went to the allotment this morning and I have what I believe to be a garlic shoot emerging from the ground where I buried the cloves. So at least one didn't die! Have to wait and see if the other four come up. Of course I could be wrong and it is just a dock coming through.

Ok another update, four garlic shoots have been seen. They are about 10 cm high.

On another note my elephant garlic cloves have been received from Kings Seeds. I will try to get them in the ground next week. Anyone else getting ready to plant garlic?

I planted my garlic on the 11/9/2018 (Germadour) and the 13/09/2018 (Provence Wight and Mikulov Wight) so they're not up yet. I'd expect to see the first shoots beginning of October.

So's mine. Well two varieties (Germador and Provence) have a few shoots showing. It's just been a few days since I went down and I was giving it 3 weeks to get the roots down and shoots up.
