  • Watering System Help

    Hi all,

I recently installed a watering system to go up the garden and help me when I am away for a few days to water the beds, whilst the first couple work perfectly by the time it gets to the end the water isn't coming out which I think is just due to a lack of pressure. Is there a pump or way of getting it to work better that people may be able to share with me?

    Thanks so much

First suggestion would be to lift the water reservoir higher.

    What watering system is it?

There are solar powered pumped irrigation systems around but I don't have one.

What Jay-ell said - mine came with a recco of a minimum of 25cm above the watering level.

Also check they aren't blocked or leaking on the way (if they are on/under the soil sometimes roots can find them). with a drip feed system you are effectively putting low-ish pressure water up to a very small hole and it doesn't take a lot to put them off...

Second thing would be to get a bigger reservoir - then move that as high ad you can. That way the water level drops less for the same volume of watering.

I use a 250l water butt on a stack of bricks and paving slabs as well as the water butt stand.

Have you put the end cap on the hose? Is it a system where the hose runs direct from the tap?

Could be a bit trial and error. Can you fit T pieces in near the source so the water goes to each bed in parallel? If you are connected to a tap, this should be possible.

Yes it connects directly to the outside tap

if it goes direct to the tap, it's unlikely too be pressure.
                air-lock?
                imperceptible uphill section?
can you swap the bits around/feed from a different end to see about blockages?

can you reduce the flow rate to the individual drip points if shut off all drip points to push the water to the end, once you are sure you have water to the furthest point keep a good flow going to it and work back opening the drip points, keep checking the flow to the end point, and adjust accordingly, if it is mains supply you are using there should be sufficient pressure to reach all points. Unless you are gardening on the highest point of your district if so get a large tank and follow Jay-ells advice

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
