Neighbours dog tormenting chooks

Had a distressing phone call today (first day back at work) from my children - the neighbours dog has tunnelled under our fence and was chasing our chickens around. They managed to get the dog back and blocked its way... this isn't the first time the dog has been in our garden!

I have come home to find feathers everywhere and feel quite upset. I've tried to find out what 'legal' advice I can before we go around there and confront them with the problem.

We have replaced the fence at Christmas because their dog kept coming into our garden (the old fence was rotten but as it was behind old shrubs we didn't know this). So at our expence we've put up new fencing - lost alot of shrubs (but gained alot of garden)... its quite annoying to find that the dog is still scratching and digging at the new fence

The dog will KEEP coming into your garden...chasing chickens around, how much fun is that?!!

You have to tackle the owners - take round a bunch of loose feathers and intimate that that is all that is left of one of them ....

you could try chicken wire a foot deep and a foot accross to stop him getting in but its even more hassel for you.

When I found next doors Jack Russell trying to get into my chicken run, I "accidentally" sent my Boxer round to harass next doors chickens (in their run)....

I just need something bigger than a Rottweiler to go and carp in next door's yard so they get the message too. Hang on, OH is 6 foot 1 and 19 stone ...

Find out from your local council who your dog warden is and get advice from them.

Did the talking - no good.
Had a letter as back up but it was ripped up before being read.
Came home with a load of verbal following us.
Council contacted and dog warden is going to come and talk with us then them to remind them of their responsibilities as a dog owner.

An hour later a phone call - they didn't have our number but must have found it out! And verbal from the man of the house with an underlying threat!
They unfortunately see it as our fault as we're the ones with chickens - and in a housing estate! What were we thinking of? We should apparently go and live on a small holding it we want chickens! I wish.

Police contacted because of threat - all getting way out of hand. OH stressed and thinking of maybe getting rid of chooks. Me stressed because I don't want to. Not a good evening here.

Moved chicken house to next to our house away from the fence - and put them to bed abit early as they are now allowing their dog to bark constantly.

Not a good day. Police will be coming here for a statement and also from them. Why did it get this far? Only wanted them to keep their dogs from digging under our fence.

What is it with these people, can they not take responsibility for the children and animals? Why should you suffer, it seems so unfair, I do hope you get some satisfaction from the police involvement.

That sounds like a horrid experience for you and for your ladies.
Hope you manage to sort it out ok.
We have an electric fence around our girls. It's on all night and when we are out. Though during the day we don't bother as we are always around. It did cost us £225 but we have fields all around us and foxes are everywhere, so we thought that it was the best thing. The dogs have all received a little jolt but it keeps them away now.

All resolved - but unfortunately by using the 'strong arm of the law'.

Neighbours now keeping an eye on their dogs - requested that we move the coup - which we had already done. We have fenced off (using the orange plastic fencing) the area near the end of our garden so the chooks can't get close (its 3 fence panels as the end of our garden is backed by two neighbours). We will have to look at a permanent result but this will do for now. We don't have to conform but will do our best to keep the peace.

Going to move the chooks to the other side of garden but will check with other neighbours to let us know if their puppy starts to worry at the fence.

Now to enjoy our pets.
