    It takes 18 hours of daylight (or artificial light) to "make" an egg so the more daylight a hen gets, the better she will lay.

    I used to keep my 24 banties in a lean-to with one wall completely heavy duty polythene, one panel H/D wire mesh that was boarded in winter, and an ill-fitting door that let in plenty of fresh air. Free range outside all day. Cato (think Pink Panther) was always at the centre of the group huddle at night and his ladies never indulged in more than light bickering, ending with the junior ranks on the ends of the huddle.
