  • Water in or out?

    Argh!

Should my chickens water be in the little house, or out in the run?

If we put it in the run, they push it over, and if we put it in the house they poo in the water.

We top it up every day, but have to wash it out in the house when there is chicken poop on it... not nice...

Where do you keep your water?

    Thanks

I'm just resigned to scrubbing out their water container. It's too heavy to hang, I've tried raising it up and putting it on a block but to no avail, they kick around so much that all sorts, including pooh gets in there.
If there is an answer, I'd be glad to hear it.

I've got a proprietory drinker for the chicks and a washing up bowl in the run for the bog hens. I have to wash both of them out to stop algae growing in them but not really that often, and a skoosh around with the hosepipe seems to do the trick.

I remove the water each night to clean it... I used to hang it on a low branch but as that was too close to 'those neighbours' I now have it closer by. I have also put it on a block which helped.

Does it depend on what size? My smaller one (which I brought specially to use when adding 'medicine stuffs') gets knocked over far too easily - so a waste of money!

Just line the water container with a carrier bag or cling film and fill with water. Next day, throw the liner away and fit new one and refil. I hate cleaning bowls as well.

I suspend hooks from the roof of the run and hang the water bottles from there, it really works

I have a 'glug' from Omlet attached to the side of the run, low enough for the girls to use, high enough that very little gets kicked into it. It works well for me. In the house I have a heavy china bowl - too heavy to kick over - but it does need cleaning every day. However, given that almost every creature can suvive for a while without food but not without water - giving clean water every day is something of a priority!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
