If you keep chickens in a residential area in your back garden how many can you have and is it right that the coop needs to be a meter away from the boundary with next door, thanks

I do know that if you have 50 or more chickens you need to register with DEFRA

You're not allowed cockerels in a built up area, because of the noise pollution I suppose. Never heard it mentioned they can't be on the boundary line. Mine are!Comment

Here in Edinburgh you can put up huts etc in your garden without needing planning permission if they comply with certain maximum height and size limits, and are a minimum of a metre away from your shared boundary. This applied to the summerhouse we just put up.
I imagine a chicken coop would be the same.
