  • red mite in home

    Hi All,
Can you tell me please whether red mite can live in your home? I noticed over a couple of weeks that I had an itch and saw a miniscule dot on my hand on a couple of occasions.I thought it was just a tiny fly or something so just brushed it off, but now thinking it was red mite. EEK! I'm freaking out!!

Do you keep chickens Raine? I always shower and wash my clothes after cleaning them out. Red mites are a pest in summer. I have found them living between bricks lying in the garden. If they have not had a meal they are light coloured it’s only when they have fed that they are red. I’ve never had a problem with them in the house but the chicken house is another matter. I don’t think that I have ever been bitten by them they just irritate as they run over the skin. You may find this link useful https://poultrykeeper.com/blog/will-...st-your-house/

    Best of luck

      Hi,
I've kept chickens for about 8 years, normally with very problems! Trouble is, this was not after a clean up but I'm sure they were red mite.

If you think they are in the house I would suggest that you have a word with a friendly vet. There are sprays for the house if the cat or dog has fleas so he may be able to point you in the right direction rather than spending money on commercial stuff which often doesn’t work. If my hens get red mite it is usually about this time of year. One sign that there is an infestation is when the hens won’t go into the house at night because they are being bitten
