I ended up with 3 books - all good and all just that little bit different:

Starting with Chickens - A beginners guide. (Already mentioned)

Then I got, (with chooks) Keeping Pet Chickens by Johannes Paul & William Windham - a colourful guide

A bit more indepth - Poultry - A guide to management by Carol Twinch

As I say, all good books, all slightly different so I go to all three for advice - then ask on here too

Be warned though, chickens are a bit like allotments, they're addictive. There's always that one more that you want.

Its true!! We were only going to have two or three, now its six, all different breeds, and they are absolutely fab, we love 'em!!!

Buff Orpington - good to look at but not very bright and a big cowardly chicken - very docile though, and now Queenie has settled in shes great!!
Speckled Sussex - our Marge is a chatterbox - lovely placid bird
Cochin - really nice bird, good for a starter bird I would say, as our Betty is really easy to handle and such a lady.
Wyandotte - nice bird but our Ingrid is a bit more flighty
Our white sussex Cenni is the wildest one we have, doesnt like being picked up at all.
We also were sold an alleged Cream Legbar chick Doreen (cost us £5 and 20 x in vet bills since as she was ill within a day) - she is now about 26 weeks (as far as we know), and has the head and neck of a Welsummer, the back of a Cream Legbar all brown and grey, and then she has feathers on her feet, so goodness knows - maybe shes an ostrich!!! She is cute though and again very interactive!!

        Stupid names I know
Sorry to ramble, but good stuff to have is a bottle of purple spray for those pecked moments (if you integrate more chooks, bound to happen!), some poultry spice is good too.

We have only had chooks since Aug 06, so dont know a great deal, but they are really good fun!!!
