  • I feel like chicken tonight!

Yay we got our chooks this afternoon/evening.
They arrived at around 5.30pm and have settled in nicely.
We got 3 bantams; 1 is a black pekin (big suze), 1 is a new hampshire red (gwen the hen) and 1 is a maran (willow).
I have taken some photos will try to post them - i now realise how difficult it is to take a good photo of a chicken!
Like i say they have settled in really quickly and soon came downstairs to check out the run and have some food and water. When i took the end off the coop to get a photo Willow did a runner - cue scary moment chasing around the garden (probably not a great idea for their first day); some expert herding by Dawn soon got her in though.
Come dusk only 1 took themselves to bed (big suze), we had to put the other two inside.
The lady who delivered said not to expect any eggs for a few days because they've had a stressful journey - but we'll check anyway!

Not sure why the photo of the coop didn't upload - is it 3 per post max??

Poultry in motion by the sound of it. How I envy you with your new hens. You’ll have to tell us how they settle in during the next few days.

Well, the first night came, and only one of the chooks took themselves to bed. My wife (dawn) had to pick the other two up and place them upstairs, and they slept in the nesting box.
This morning they all came out when Dawn let the ramp down, and I cleaned all the poo out of the nesting box and added it to the compost heap. They have been happily pecking food and water all day, and scratching the garden.
I could sit and watch them for ages - far better than TV!
We gave them some sweetcorn this early evening and they didn't really go for it - anybody suggest some good chicken treats?
Anyway - they ALL took themselves up the ramp tonight and when we checked they are all perched! Clever chooks!

All we need now is an egg - can't wait!

            Hi Notmilk,

For our chickens number one treat at the moment is apple half a fruit between the two per day, most fruit in fact but not banana they hate it, also porridge oats uncooked, mashed potato, boiled rice, steamed green veg like broccoli or green cabbage but they won't eat a bunch of raw greens hanging up in the run

My girls went mad for my early purple sprouting - so much so, I ended up pulling it up & giving it them as a treat....hea ho! Also, pasta, esp spaghetti..........they go mad for it ! Good luck with the eggs, they are addictive these chickens......treated myself to 6 more last week, very naughty I know, started off with 2 to keep the grass down........4 years later they have grown to 16..funny that. I so want chickens!!! But I don't think we can at the moment as they would drive our neighbour bonkers and we haven't really got room for an enclosure for them. Will have to wait until we get a bigger place...got to win a million first though so I think we might be chickenless for a while. I so envy you!!!

If the run is big enough dig a littlebit over and watch them scratch about looking for all the little bugs! An old log left in the run for a few weeks and then removed can get them quite excited as well!
