  • Nestboxes?

I intend venturing into poultry keeping soon. I have a shed and I've just constructed a large (hopefully) fox proof run. The shed is 8 foot square and half has been used for chooks and the other half for tool storage. I would like to utilise all of the shed for chooks but would like to add exterior nesting boxes with a lid on top. A few questions I have are:-

For 10 chooks, how many nest boxes do I need?

How wide and high does each nest box need to be?

How far from the base of the hut to the base of the nest box?

In what proximity to the window or entry flap should the nestboxes be?

Does it matter where the roosting bar is in relation to the nest boxes and what height should this be?

youll only need 3 to 4 boxes they will happily share

about 12 to 14 inches high, deep and wide

    about a foot high

out of draughts and shady they like to feel safe and secure

about 2 1/2 to 3 feet high preferably on the opposite side to the boxes

    hope this helps

Try getting Starting with Chickens and or Making Mobile Hen Houses out of the library - both will give info on ratio of hens to boxes and height and length of roosting bars for the number of hens you are looking for.
