  • Good news about battery hens

    Hi,

I saw the following article about the banning of battery hens. Good news I think.

you may not buy battery eggs - but lots of products (cakes, biscuits etc) will contain them.
So, a total ban is best.

If you check out the Battery Hen Welfarre Trust website they have a list of supermarkets who do and don't stock products made with battery eggs.

A total UK ban will mean importing battery hens and products from elsewhere.

Just because that is the way it works, people need cheap eggs because free range ones are artificially expensive.

Can anyone explain why a large quantity of the milk produced in the UK is shipped overseas and we import so much? Now that I would like to understand!!

I think we all need to keep a goat or cow and a few chickens!!! (not opting for a goat though - had enough years of goat-keeping thanks)

I agree with Shirl, it is all right banning the battery farming in this country but can you guarentee the rules on the welfare of the birds in other countries would be as strict as in this country.

That's no reason for us not to do it; UK should set an example. A crass eg. coming up .... other countries order raped women to be stoned to death. We don't.

I don't think free range eggs are that much more expensive...our local does them £1 for 6. I disagree that we "need" eggs at all (or meat, or chocolate or beer)... sure, we like to eat them, but we don't "need" them.

I will pay an extra thruppence on an egg if it means the bird is kept humanely.

Me too (pay extra that is) I have been so spoiled by having my own fresh laid eggs all summer after having previously buying cheapo eggs I will not buy those any more. Free range is dearer, but much nicer. I'm still getting about an egg a week off the girls though, and the yolks are gradually getting more orange and less insipid.
(my hens are ex-bats, had them just over a month)

Just a word of warning re free range eggs, there is some pretty dodgy interpretations knocking around so the hens may not really be quite as free as you imagine. We're lucky that we an get ours from a farm up the road where you can see them wandering around the field with good access to a number of shelters. Can get duck eggs from them also which are similarly free.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
