weve been keeping chooks for 9 months now, they have a secure enclosure complete with hen house, the six chickens we have are let out into the garden when were at home to vandalise the veg patch and desicrate our borders (but who could tell them off), everything for them has been hunkydory, until friday when they were let out for 2 hours in the bright but frosty afternoon, our dog was in and out all day like usual and everything was normal, until we went out to heard our brood back into their enclosure as we could only find 5 chooks, Ermintrude was nowhere to be seen, we were getting worried as dusk was fast approaching then we started to notice her white feathers on the frost covered ground, then when peering over into the neighbours garden the worst fears were confirmed, when a mass of her white feathers were evident.
poor young Ermintrude had been snatched.
fortunatley the rest of her family were only shook up but not attacked
we'd like to thank Ermintrude for her entertainment and companionship, and hope that she enjoyed her 9 months with us and we appologise for not being there when you needed us the most
and to the fox who snatched her your days are numbered!
    sadly missed.
    Ermintrude

Welcome to the Vine, Mushty and Happy Christmas. The moral of your story is 'never give chooks names'.

          Hi
Poor Emintrude, my hens are in a covered run but was rather disturbed to find not ten feet away, the remains of a pidgeon in like state. No sign of the foxes digging into the run yet, but oh when I go up to see the girls, to see all three come rushing over to the door iis a relief.
