  • New Hens

    Hi,
i am getting my hens this weekend, every thing is in place for them, shed, run, feeders etc. what i would really like to know is if i should leave them locked in the shed for 24hrs when i get them as some books say to do this.
    many thanks

Just so jealous!!, we were all set to get some bantams last year but the covenants on the house won't let us :-(

If you have an enclosed run then I would let them out into that for a bit of daylight. They might be awkward to get in the first night but if they can't go roost in trees or anywhere you should be able to get them back in.

        Have to agree with Shirlthegirl

Put them in the shed with access to the run and leave them to their own devices.

Take a torch and do a headcount in the shed when it's dark to make sure they are all in, then tuck them up for the night

I agree, that method has worked for me too. If they find their way out, they'll find their way back in ok at dusk.
