  • new here, help needed urgently

Hello, i'm here and i'm sorry to jump in asking for help, but I need some.
My chickens are very free range, and when one was missing for a couple of days i feared the worst. however I found her sitting on a clutch of eggs under a table, behind some plant pots in a far corner of my garden.
Now stupidly (very in retrospect) i left her there, have been feeding her, but this morning i found a dead chick - it's obviously too cold and wet.
The question is - can i move her now (I know i'll get pecked but I can live with that) and any hatched/unhatched eggs - I can make them a pen of their own in the hay barn, or will that ensure death/desertion for the rest of the chicks - many thanks in advance to anyone who can help
    cheers

Hi there Rosie - don't worry about asking for advice - this forum is great for giving good answers.

If it was me I would move said hen and any chicks to a warm safe place. The weather forecast is not good for little chicks out in the wild world at the moment. I think that if you leave them there, there could be more dead chicks. Perhaps if you move them you might lose some, but on the other hand you might not.

If she is a good mum and you can give her a quiet spot with food and water to hand, I suspect that she will settle quite happily as long as you keep her chicks with her.

Give it a go and let us know how you get on!
    Kath

moved them, now have 4 live and healthy looking chicks, and more hatching. Hen was very grumpy about being moved, but settled really quickly.
      thanks :-)

meant to add yesterday - up to 6 but that will be our lot as shs has now left the unhatched eggs, the six are sweet and pecking at their chick crumbs happily :-)
