  • Very sick hen

Went down this morning to feed my girls and found my young Maran lying in the shed with what looked like spit coming out of her eyes??

Has anyone heard of symptoms like this? I'm so worried my hands are shaky, but I do have an appointment with the vet at 1pm.

                Not good

Went back to the lottie a) to give them the worming stuff I had forgotten earlier
and b) to check the others thoroughly, they all seem ok, a couple of mucky vent feathers but worming should sort that.
Got back to pick up Maran to take to vet and found she had died while we were out.
Have called vet and he is going to ring me back to determine whether she will need an post mortem or not. Can't get my head round how quickly this has happened, spent a fair bit of time down there last night when I nipped down before dusk and she was running around, eating etc.
I'm at the 'beating myself up' stage, wondering if there's something I should have noticed but didn't.

Thanks so much for the support guys.

really sorry your hen died, post mortem might be good idea if they can find out what it was incase of infection to your other birds.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that Kirsty. It might be best to ask the vet to give her a post mortem anyway to put your mind at rest. Chickens can go pretty quickly as I recall. Hope all your others are okay. Chin up, it is one of the trials of animal keeping.

My vet is great! He said the sypmtoms pointed to a mycoplasma infection, and that he has actually seen the same syptoms before.
Also as all the other other hens are very likely to be infected, but not actually ill, he is prescribing some Tylan, to be given in their water for 3 days. Can't use any eggs over those 3 days or for 7 days post treatment, but hey thats a small price to pay for keeping the rest of my little flock healthy.

                            Hi Kirsty & Lauren

Sorry to hear about Maran, her quick demise must be a shock to you. From you previous posts it sound's like she'd had a good life being looked after by you.

So sorry to hear your hen didn't make it - at least you have a good vet who knows what's going on. Really don't beat yourself up - chickens are really good at hiding symptoms and you are in no way to blame. By the time you notice, it's often too late anyway. At least you've caught it quickly before the other hens succumb and you know what it is now so you can do something about it.
