  • How much do yours eat ?

    Hi all
Was just wondering how much Your hens eat ? I only have 2 but they only seem to have about one mugs worth of pellets a day. They are always outside daytime and pecking around /eating worms, slugs, grass etc . I,m not sure but i think they could of lost abit of weight from when i got them ( They have access to as much pellets and fresh cooked veg as they can eat Apart from when they are locked up for the night dusk till about 7:00)
They still look great and very active/happy But i did notice one egg today was alot more white speckled then normal.

    Your thoughts please

    Ps
I do Sprinkle a handfull of oyster shell around the grass aday.

My four get about 500g layers' pellets every day mixed with crushed eggshells, honey and poultry spice. They eat most of it unless I let them free-range when they eat my petunias instead. Thay have oyster grit separately but tend to ignore it.

I started keeping them in "their" area more and letting them into the rest of the garden only when they've eaten their breakfast since I was getting soft-shelled and broken eggs, then none at all for a while. Maybe coincidence but they're begining to lay again!

I would cut back on the 'treats'. The layers pellets is a complete balanced ration. Once you start adding other bits to it you are knocking that balance out. A few treats here and there is ok but if you think how little a bird eats in a day it doesn't take a huge amount to sway the balance. The calcium they need should be in the layers ration if they are eating enough of it. Lack of flint grit can prevent the birds from getting all the goodness out of the feed and can also rusult in runny poos.
