  • What a rip off!!!

New to poultry keeping I went to get some food for them at the local pet supermarket.(Jollyes)

Lined up were bins full of various feeds which you scooped out and they weighed for you. I'd always asumed that these 'pick and mix' self service tubs were supposed to be cheaper than bagged produce.

I thought while I was there I may as well checkout the price of the bagged stuff!
The layers mash pellets were £7.49 for a 20KG bag and the Mixed grain was £6.69 for a 20Kg bag. The loose stuff was £1.19 per Kilo!

Now you don't have to be a mathematical genious to work out which I went for.

If I'd bought the loose equivalent instead of costing me £14.18 it would have cost me £47.60 or in simple terms three times as much.

    The title says it all!

We found this too Snadger, better to buy the bagged stuff than loose as it orks out cheaper. OH was stunned at how much we saved buying it bagged.

They open the bags in order to sell it loose (well most places do) for the benefit of people who can't store whole bags, or who are daft enough to want to buy tiny amounts at a time.

        Rocket science it ain't!

CJ Birdfood do some great plastic barrels that are about 15-18 kilo capacity. I have several for food and grit, I keep them in a wooden storage locker and so far - over a year - no problems, even though we did get mice in the locker.

Can I sack my cats by the way - mouse meet cat, cat meet mouse....... cat runs away!

If you don't have transport, small amounts of the loose feed may be all some people carry.

It may or may not be of interest but my friend (recently aquired 3 hens, getting 4 more soon) took away my cauliflowers that hadnt come to anything - she said they just wolfed it down.

I do get it delivered, but depending on where you get it from the delivery charge is quite high. I've found a better price now, but you have to compromise between freshness of the bags and if you bulk buy and get a cheap delivery cost or more expensive, frequent deliveries.

Mad innit? I pay roughly the same price for mine in 20kg sacks. I get through one of corn/wheat and 2 of pellets per month for 16 hens. My local place charges about 85p per kilo, but still much cheaper to get it in the sacks.
Keep my sacks in a big black dustbin I got at Thing-me Bobs.

Thanks Stamford. They are cheaper, but the haven't got any stock in Allen & Page Organic Layers Pellet - Poultry Feed. I'm not sure about the delivery charge, it's £6.09 for < 30kg, but not sure what the price would be for more than one 20kg bag of feed.
