    Chickens

I'm pretty sure several on here do use them.

I had a look at a unit at GWlive earlier in the year and thought they were quite small, however the lady on the stand assured me they were fine and the chickens like sleeping on top of each other.

So its on my list of things to buy when i win the lottery.

Have you looked at the Website for Eglu's, there is a forum on there where people compare notes etc...
And details of owners days around the country, where owners of igloos let you come round and see the set ups.

I have an Omlet Eglu and I think it is egg-cellent (Sorry!). We bought ours second hand, and I think I would suck-my-teeth if we had to buy it new.

Its easy to clean, very functional, and the Chooks seem to like it (they are always "home" when we go out to shut them up for the night), and I would recommend it. But its expensive relative to just buying something that could be converted into a Coupe - assuming you have the DIY skills.

I think the run on the Eglu is pretty small. Fine for containing them at night during the summer (we lock them in the coup itself during the winter nights).

How about some electric net fencing for a larger run?

My 6 ex-bats live in a converted dog kennel (3'x4' approx) and have the run of the garden during the day - they all squash together at night in the bottom 3rd of house! Chicken mountain! But I bet they are warm!! I have never tried an Eglu, I was put off by the price, but others seem to be happy with them, so they can't be too bad

I have an eglu for my three hens, and we're all very happy with it! I did wonder what on earth had come over me, paying that much for it, but I haven't regretted it (try not to think about it too much to be honest!) - it is everso easy to keep clean, which was one of my top things on the list of priorities, and the hens certainly seem very happy in it. The three of them squash right up into one corner to sleep, so as far as space in the house itself goes there would theoretically be room for a few more, but 3 is quite enough in the run. Mine have their eglu inside an enclosure of 25m of electric fence, which we move about on the veg plot. They are shut inside the eglu run at about 6 to 8.30 ish each night, and put themselves to bed in the house - I shall shut them into the house in the winter though. To be perfectly honest I don't think I would feel happy if the eglu run was the extent of their run space, but I suppose it's heaven compared to a battery hens cramped quarters. I know many people do keep them in the eglu run alone. Maybe not so bad if they have the opportunity to free range now and then.

But as far as the Eglu itself goes, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

me too. But we have 3 x Chickens and perhaps 3 x Banthams would be OK for space in the run.

Ours have free run of the garden during the day, but I'm planning to put the whole Eglu in the greenhouse (30' x 10') during the winter so that they have some decent shelter, and can sort out the weeds in the veg patch when they venture out!

Omlet claim the eglu will happily accomodate upto 4 large fowl !! this would be at a push, but im sure it would accomodate 4-5 bantams or smaller fowl such as silkies or friesians, with plenty of space without giving them free run of your garden.
I have only seen an eglu at shows and one friend has one and they are very well made and will last a life time.
I would also add that, having just plucked up the courage to spend £360 on one, I have found there is currently a 3 week waiting list for eglus and this extends to a minimum of 4 weeks if you are ordering chickens through omlet !! I am in for a long wait then !!!!!

We got our chickens locally, and the breeder was extremely helpful when confronted with all our idiotic novice questions. Just in case you have a similar helpful breeder locally ...
