  • Yellow Poo

    Hello,

I have a look through the threads and although I have picked up a lot of info I am slightly worried about one of my girls.

She has not been laying for just over a week although looking at some threads this can happen. My concern is over her poo which is slightly watery than normal but with a yellow in it. She seems ok in herself, eating, drinking and doing other chicken stuff with the rest of our girls. All three have access to our back garden as they start rattling their beaks agains the coop if I even attempt to keep them in there when they are awake.

We have just fininshed worming all three of them with Flubenvet but she had stopped laying before we started that. She has also lost a few feathers on her underside and seems a little thinner than normal.

I have contacted our vets and although they did offer me an appointment the suggestion was that as her behaviour is normal it may be worth waiting to see how she is after a few days.

    Any advice please?

well I would have said worm her and see but if you have tried that, and she has lost weight I would go to the vets, its usually one of the only simptoms you get as they act "normal" till they cant keep it up. it may be nothing but chooks tend to go quick, at least then you will know.

Have you checked for mites? Look at the base of the feathers esp near the vent. For red mite wipe a bit of kitchen towel along the underside of the perch (think when they're on it in the evening is best?), if you squish one it will show up as red (blood!). Both of these can cause weight loss.
Yellow poo is normal as long as it is not every time, mine certainly do a variation in cloour/consistency and I imagine it has a lot to do with what they eat - like any other animal!
But it's your chicken so for your peace of mind if you think she needs to see a vet then you know best!
Let us know how you get on, Vicky

It's not shell-less egg yolk is it? The "slightly watery than normal but with a yellow in it" makes me think that it might be. Also I find that when my chooks do this (occasionally) they find it more difficult to "lay" the egg than they do for one with a fully formed shell. If that's the case, then a bit of poultry spice and extra calcium might help, though as the others have said, get the vet to give her the once-over, better safe than sorry.

        Good luck
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

          Hello again,

Thank you for your advice and thoughs. Taken her to the vet but he couldn't give much more advice then you. Since then she seems to have picked up and the wellow poo has almost cleared up. Still a little thinner than I'm used to but she is getting some really juicy treats in the afternoons and really gobbling them up so I guess a few more days will tell.

Checked for mites and not found any but will give the coop a very good clean and dust this weekend to be sure.

          Thank you again.
