  • Chicken coup nearly ready

Chicken run and house nearly completed husband has been working really hard in the rain for the last week ha ha. Still cannot decide on the flooring for the run, choose between hemcore or wood chippings. The run is 4’ X 12’ and covered I need a flooring that will not cost too much but will keep the smell down as it backs on to a neighbors garden. also how may chickens can I comfortably keep, the chicken house is 4’ square.

hi alison, our hen house is 1m sq (3ft3ins x 3ft 3ins) and about 1m tall, not including the nest/ egg laying boxes(2) we only have 4 hens - 3 ex battery girls and a point of lay Speckeldy( currently laying every other day). From what information that I have read on the web regarding hen house sizes i would consider 6 hens or about 8 bantams in a house of this size obviously others will have different ideas as to numbers, please bear in mind that a chicken requires approx 30cm(12ins) of perch space to roost and a bantam approx 20cm (8ins)perches if more than 1 should be at least 30cm(12ins ) apart. I`m sure that you will get other replies on this subject and any other querries that you may have. You will get quite alot of enjoyment from keeping hens at home, every bird has its own character.....alanm
