How do you tell the age of a Chook?

Hello to all,

How doe you tell if a hen is old?

I've asked the same question on another chooky forum and was told you can tell by there feet! Apparently as hens get older there feet get caloused and look scalier if that makes sense!
It's only a rough guide I'm afraid though.
