right, the nest box is nearly done, just needs trimming down and a roof, i could only ignore the rain for so long, but now i've run out of nails, so need a trip to town to get some more

i managed to get a crate from the tile shop up the road, it was originally going to be the house, but i decided it wasn't big enough if i wanted ducks and chickens, so it will be a nice big nest box now. once it has some partitions in it, and i've cut the front off and attached it to the house i'm sure it will be nice and snug.

I've used small pallets for this.

oooooooo i like ostrich, very tasty and healthy i hadn't thought of that, wonder if i can turn it into 'poultry' for allotment regs.

i reckon it will be big enough for 6 nest boxes, i'm partly thinking ahead, and partly thinking that ducks don't roost like chickens and prefer to lie down (apparently) so hopefully there will be enough room for them to sleep and the chickens to lay eggs, only problem is that i will have to go into the shed for the eggs, although i had planned to put a lift up lid on it.

anyway, i might get a goose

this one will probably end up on the allotment eventually, but i just wanted something big enough for every option, i could even split the run and cage into 4 and and it will be very easy to make a broody house and run out of part of it or even have chipmunks if i wanted, ...... not that i do, but i like keeping my options open ....... especially when the options are free i'll make the blokes a brew then *wonders if i can swap a brew for some concrete, sand and gravel

ok theres hailstones the size of table tennis balls now ....... i have a feeling something is telling me to give up house making ...... anyway, finished the front panel now, it looks just like the back panel ..... have bought a tape measure, so i can make sure all the panels are the same height .... when the weather has decided to help out a bit, i'll trim the panels, i'm getting excited about putting it together now

I can't believe you're building your own Lynda - it's looking good. You put me to shame, I have to get other people to build mine. Hope the weather starts behaving soon....you'll be climbing the walls if the rain doesn't go away!

i can't afford to spend hundreds of pounds on something which is supposed to be saving money ...... it may still fall down yet lol .... i've never made anything like this before, guess i'll never know if i can do it until i tried ...... it's just a case of thinking logically (for me that's a bit alien) and adapting things as you go along ...... and i want some babies so i haven't got a choice really

Wish I could send you some of our sunny weather Linda. Only rain we have had this week fell during the night. Not trying to make you jealous - I'm awaiting the next installment of your building work so just wished you had good weather too.

The price of chicken runs/houses now really are crazy. Obviously they've caught on to the fact that chicken keeping is 'in' at the moment, so everyone is cashing in on the poor folk who lack D.I.Y skills!

Thankfully my cousin has done ours for us, and of course as he's family it's cost nothing more than a few cups of coffee and biscuits!

I think you're doing a fab job Lynda, can't wait to see the finished article! A chicken/duck paradise!

                      Rain, rain go away....

i haven't really got any diy skills lol, that's probably why i've just nearly killed myself by dropping a pallet on my head .... twice ....... but it's ok it's not killed me yet

have just confuddled myself totally, was attaching the back wall to the nest box, got it all nicely nailed on, then realised it should have been the other way round so the panalling is to the outside, so it's now the right way, i'll go take some more photos when this rain passes, i'm not standing in lightning for any chickens lol. just hope it's not too heavy to move now ....... top tip build heavy bits in situ though i'm sure rob and his mate/s will manage.

they better had think it's paradise when they are in it, or i'll be feeding them to the cats.

Lynda You can't feed them to the cats!!

I attempted to dismantle my wardrobe when I moved house, only I did it whilst standing inside it! lol...anyway, the entire thing came crashing down on my head (and we're not talking a silly wee flat pack wardrobe, we're talking a solid wood old wardrobe!). I was a bit dazed...and definitely in shock, but...2 years later I'm still here! I can't walk whilst talking now, or walk whilst chewing gum...guess I don't have enough brain cells left for that...but, I'm alive and kicking!

ok picture 1 i have attached a pallet to the top of the nest box, the wall side will be on the outside above the nest box, so the panels are on the other side ... the inside will be lined so i haven't panelled that, then the roof will be flush with the wall, it probably would have been easier to trim down the walls of the nest box first, but i've not been able to get the circular saw out with the rain,so i'll trim it when i can get it on it's side.

                                picture 2 side view,

picture 3 back view. the nest box will be cut down to the height of the corner panel.

oh yeah, i have noticed i haven't removed the diagonal bits at the front, i only realised, after i'd nailed the wall on for the second time, i'll get them off before i put the walls on.
