  • well i've been at it for 4 hours, god bless tens machines and codeine ....... the lining is all done except for a bit of laminate round the window, theres a couple of gaps to fill, and 4 planks to put on the outside to neaten the edges, and the lino to put up the walls and they will be in

pic 1 ....my solution to the thought that i would definitely break a pane of glass, is this .... it's unbreakable, but still lets light through cost £1

pic 2 ... the nest box complete with lino and laminate walls ..... better remove the circular saw, cos they might start trying to make their own adjustments

pic 3 ... starting the interior panelling, combination of chipboard and thin mdf

pic 4 ... window wall lined bottom mdf, top laminate, and a big thick piece of wood from neighbour along the top of the side pallet, will make a good brew shelf

    • pic 5 .... the other side, all panelled with mdf and another thick piece of wood

pic 6 .... outside, i've added a couple of planks top and bottom to neaten up my crappy saw line that's not quite straight.

pic 7, improvisation of roofing felt, ie i haven't got any, so have used lino, which i will get round to trimming, hopefully some will turn up on freecycle so i can bung it over the top.

pic 8 ........ the nearly finished article

lol, i actually said that to sarzwix the other day, but at least i know it won't break, i've smacked it 3 times with a hammer

thanks all, i am actually quite chuffed with it, i'd normally have got fed up and given up way before now lol ..... guess it shows i'm determined to keep the chooks happy

have just been covering one wall with lino tiles, but my arms have given up working now, so they will have to wait just a bit longer ..... i have realised it's gonna take me 6 months to find all the pinged off nails before the chooks eat em though ..... anyone got a metal detector??

Nah... that's Lyndas way of reminding the chooks of their eggly duties or else.......

Lynda I think virtually any one on here (excluding professional carpenters) would be proud of that chookloo if they made it themselves! You have improvised and cobbled together a thing of beauty. Well done, I for one am in awe

                  • hey once i've painted it the dodgy bits won't be so obvious .... so from a distance in the dark once it's painted .... you can add carpenters to that lol .....

i'm most chuffed that it's been so cheap to make ..... and have a good neighbour that brings junk home for me cos i'll probably make use of it ..... oh and freecycle, skips and builders love of cups of tea

next time i would buy huge bags of nails though, they're cheaper lol ......all made for a total of £20 which would have been about £15 if i'd bought bigger bags, and i still have loads of hinges and things that i bought for the original design and changed it. so really i could have made it for the price of a big bag of nails, a £1 for the 'window' and £4 for tubes of sealant so total about a tenner

                          • i shall charge rent lol ........ top tip of the day, stick on floor tiles do not stay on an upright wall overnight without using a hair-dryer to stick them ....... i have now resorted to no more nails, to keep them there ..... unfortunately 4 tiles stuck together and it's impossible to separate them, so there is now a white tile where there should be a blue one

                            • tiling up one side all done, back wall painted cream, lino put on left hand wall (if putting on walls use the cheap lino, it's bendier, theres a couple of bumps on the wall), but the chooks wont mind, was doing a final run round with silicone to make the joins in the lino waterproof so i can wash it out with the hose...... when i actually snapped the silicone gun so i had to borrow one off a neighbour, no probs till i was doing under the light, cos it was dark, and i knocked it off, so i gave up and came in,

but theres smashed lightbulb all over the floor now

....... though one cool thing, when you break a energy saving light bulb, it takes about 30 seconds to go out and is filled with white bowdery stuff .......... anyway, hopefully they should get a couple of hours in it tomorrow or the day after, hope they like the colours
