  • Fireworks already

Boo hoo hoo. Next door are letting off fireworks already, yes in the daylight The poor chooks have hot-footed it to the back door poor things, they've never heard one before so I've let them in to calm them down but now the fireworks have stopped. Hope they're not going to be just letting off odd ones all night.

How do chooks tend to cope with the fireworks? Will they get used to it quickly or is it best to bring them in especially on bonfire night?

Yikes!...I'd never thought about that before.

I know the horses at the yard get really upset and the radio is left on loud and lights on to lessen the flashes. All horses are kept in on both bonfire night and the Saturday night before/after

Still doesn't sort out the rest of them though.

Poor little things- I bet it must affect the egg laying too.

my poor dog shakes like a leaf and barks when they go off, sadly this is not limited to bonfire night, they go off all year round, birthdays, anniversaries, xmas, drives me mad, they shouldn't be in the shops till a day before, and should be out the day after.

as long as that.....i say they should be on sale for 1 hour on 5th Nov only, & think they shouldnt be for sale to the general public anyway, cause the morons spoil it for the majority. Nothing against organised displays.

There is often talk of limiting sales to 'organised displays' and in principle I agree. The snag is that no government is going to do it in a way that allow the SMALL LOCAL organised displays to continue. The big ones are not nearly as much fun (and if they happen to be in your area, much more frightening for livestock)!
I do think that the 'super' fireworks now sold in so many garden centres should be restricted, but perhaps the prices, and the fact that they are mostly sold in 'packs' costing tens of pounds (minimum) deters the morons?
Restricting fireworks to 5th isn't on in multicultural Britain. Too many other festivals they get used for these days.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

organised displays are fun, and safer too, I agree they should be banned for sale to the general public, the age restriction not only gets ignored, but sadly most of the 'morons' are over age anyway.

I do agree that it would be sad to lose the small local dispplays, but if they made it by license via the council or police, and made it easy enough to apply, as I would imagine they have to anyway for the public gathering, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

my dog loves fireworks ...... she either sits in the window and watches them or wants to go for a walk, so she can see them better ...... Asbo doesn't bother, but i think Cleo might get a bit freaked, she's a bit of a wuss.

do think you should keep everything in on bonfire night though, just in case, especially the chooks, cos you can't really explain to them can you

Yeah,.................... I suppose if you have a gun dog like a spannel or lab it will think all of it's birthdays have come together!

It's my German Shepherds first year with fireworks so I'll just have to wait and see how she reacts!

I hate fireworks with a passion!! I hate the noise, I can't see the attraction to smoky flashing lights...and I hate the morons who insist on running around setting them off for any reason!

I'm terrified from around Oct - Jan - always counting the cats in and out, just in case some little torag ties a banger to their tail etc. I guess I'm a bit cynical due to practicing with/for RSPCA - some of the cruely inflicted on animals by fireworks are awful (actually, you can't blame the fireworks for the cruelty...it's the humans to blame!).

I couldn't care if I never saw another firework again, as long as I live!

                      Rant over!

Ps: great excuse to bring my girlies inside though! he he

basically don't make a fuss of her if she freaks .... that reinforces that being scared is ok ...... you can download firework sounds and play them on your cd player quietly and slowly make them louder, it desensitizes the dog to the loud noises, whilst you are totally ignoring it .... so when the real thing happens, they don't even pay it any attention .... had a border collie that was a nightmare the first year i had him,he had never been out of a garden in 8 months, and was terrified of everything..... nothing worked until someone said try it and on his second bonfire night, he was out playing in the garden.

This has actually been playing on my mind also!As the chooks are at the lottie we not really got the option of bringing them indoors for a bit of TLC!But I guess ours won't be the 1st chooks that have had to endure the misery that is fireworks!!!
I totally hate them with a vengeance also!Really don't understand why they can't be banned from public sale?Surely it wouldn't be that tough to sort out licences for small organisations? What makes me laugh(??!!)is just how pathetic a lot of the "for homesale"ones are~just a loud bl**dy bang with not a lot of "oooohhhaaahhhh"factor at all!In this day & age where you'd be hard pushed to have a legal conker fight for elf & safety reasons I find it ludicrous that you can pop to the shop & get you a 'ickle piece or two of gunpowder just cos it lines the pockets of the govt!!!!I'd say rant over but in my head it's still very much from over!!!
                          BTW!~I don't like fireworks!!

di, maybe you could try the cd thing with the chooks too, if they get used to loud noises going off gently till you get them to not bother about bangs at all , hopefully you can at least condition them to not be scared and hopefully make it so they aren't quite as stressed ??

dunno if it will work, but it's gentle conditioning and most animals are conditionable.

                            PS i hate fireworks too.

I was thinking more along the lines of convincing Andi that he really should go sit with them for the night(& possibly the few nights before & after that they may be under stress)!!
