  • hmmmmm wonders how many day olds i can get in a cat box ...... i just want tiny babies, cos then they will think i'm their mummy

ok back to leaking eggs ....... i took it out, and thought i'd have a look, broke the shell, and am definitely glad i removed it ....... i decided not to actually look at what had been happening inside, when a big blob of the most disgusting smelly brown gunge started leaking through the membrane ....... i just kept it at arms length and it is now in the bin ....... oh well still the one that was alive the other day left ..... i'm giving it till weekend unless that one starts leaking too.

    • It doesn't matter if they're day olds or not - my chickens think I'm their Mummy and I got them at 14 weeks. They follow me around and chatter to me all the time - hop up on my lap - goodness, now they've learned to put their head through the catflap for attention.

They don't need to be day old chicks to fall in love with you - if you feed, water and cuddle them they'll know that!
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

        • The other option could be Garden Poultry at Kingsley Nr Frodsham. I have had chooks from there too and I'm almost sure they deliver - obviously a charge but you could have a look. They too have a web site.

                  That's sooo sweet!!

Yep- mine come legging it ( unless they are dust bathing) when I do my silly girlie call to them...bit of "come on girlie girlies.....chook chook bok....chook chook bok..come on come on...."
                  Works a treat!!
Today I was painting in the bedroom and wondered where they'd got to ( my 'free ranges' are true gypsies) and when I called them, they ran/flew to the back door- which was no-where near where I was calling from!!

They certainly know the hand wot feeds them!

                    • One final option - buy Quids In. They have a good Livestock and Poultry column. If you get your local edition the advertisers should be near to you. If you have a local free paper they usually have one too. Garden Poultry are very good if you phone them even tho their web site is out of date. Quids in comes out on Thursday!

Your voice = kitchen door, which means TREATS!! They're not as stupid as they often look, are they??

We have a large glass back door, and every time I even walk past it to get a cup of tea they all charge up and down their run squawking as if they're being murdered - and if they're free ranging - they're right up at the door looking in as if to say "what you cooking up for us now mum?".

They're hilarious...I wouldn't be without mine now!! And...I hardly have any weeds at all anywhere in the garden because they've been free ranging solid for a week! (not that I ever have any real weeds...lol....)

                        • If the new batch is disappointing, leave the idea alone until spring. Don't give up completely. You did set about this at the most difficult time of year for the purpose......

                          • As an alternative to babies, you may find 'off heat' chicks, which are usually 4-5 weeks old (but they need keeping inside for a few weeks yet at this time of year). They are still babies enough for the baby-chick fun, but old enough to be a bit easier to look after (as long as you keep a lid on their indoor quarters.....)

                            • they have their play pen all ready ..... the rabbit's using it at the moment ....... stops her trying to kill the cat, hopefully those 2 will have settled by then so psycho can get back to free ranging the living room lol

and yeah i know about it not being the best time of year, i'm just impatient lol ...... that's why i didn't bother trying duck eggs yet, as they are much less fertile in winter.

I've never seen quids in, but i'll look out for it ...... just checked online it's cheshire and liverpool, though i may be lucky, as the very edge of cheshire is only 5 mins walk ........ nope, the nearest is nantwich ...... though theres some pigs in north wales
