Inspired idea Lynda, the playpen is a cracker, never in a million years would I have thought of that.

10 eggs in ...... 6 babies ..... one egg leaked, the others not sure,as yet, but no signs of hatching ...... 3 of the hatched ones had really dark brown eggs, one of which was very small, one of the light eggs was very small too, the others were normal sized..... their parents are ..... silkys, polish, leghorns, warrens, ixworth, stars and marans.
have been looking at chicks, and pingu looks like a maran, buttercup could be a leghorn or an ixworth, there were 3 of the 6 dark brown eggs hatched, so i'm guessing the mums were marans, and the dads could be anything lol as they don't look just like marans, and one from a light tiny egg so probably a maran daddy ..... and phoenix, i have no idea lol ..... don't think theres any polish, as there arent any with hats ..... but really have no idea lol ..... (nowt new there then)
still waiting for number 3 and number 4 's definite names

i got a dust sheet and some of those elastic straps with hooks on to go round the top just in case any norty cats try to get in ..... its pretty secure, though i'm still chucking the cats out every time i leave the room for more than a couple of minutes. and the best bit is ..... it was nearly free (had to give sons mate petrol money) ....... i looked at allsorts before i had the idea, and the playpen was the most secure ...... and definitely cheapest, and gived them much more room to run round than a traditional brooder, though for now they are going in the brooder (plastic storage crate) at night, as i don't want them to get cold when the fire is off
I showed the first few pics to my OH - he admitted they were really cute, then just looked at me with that strange look... You know the one, a mixture of;
Aren't they sweet...

My permanent chook run (scheduled for the spring, when it's warmer) is in quite an exposed site, so I won't be thinking about hatching any till it warms up a bit. We haven't got room in here.
Somehow I've got to make it rabbit/fox/muntjac proof first before I'll dare leave them out there.
But, yes - I think it's on the cards...

ok, just so you know, 2 eggs were bad ....... one had a tiny few day old embryo in, and the last one had a fully grown chick but it is dead ..... but i do reckon 8 fertile eggs out of 10 is pretty good, and getting 6 live chicks out ...... i'm so chuffed with
