Not too high! A heavy breed can get bumble foot from jumping down from a considerable height. More to worry about!

My hen house was raised off the ground on legs with a metal footscraper outside the door for the hens to land on. I then had some heavy chains hanging vertically across the entrance for them to walk through . Inside the hen house they always used to half fly, half jump up onto the highest perch and then snuggle up together to keep warm.

Beware of ladders externally, foxes and rats can appear at any time

Unless your henhouse is very exposed to the elements, you really don't need to insulate the roof or walls. You could spend it on wine and chocolate instead for all your hard work on their behalf

Hope to see you on Dragons Den with your little chic-chick jackets

Would you make them to match yours?

the only reason i want to insulate the roof, is cos i'm planning on having an automatic watering system, save messing with hoses and stuff, and i don't want it to freeze.

i think i might make lots of different colours ...... they'll be dead funky

i was thinking of a ladder up to the perch. ...... the run will be completely enclosed, with netting under the ground, as we do have foxes, and i don't want them digging in. the house won't be off the ground.

i'm lost by your foot scraper and chains ??

Hi Lynda - as my hen house was about 30 inches off the ground I had a metal grid footscraper,(like the ones outside front or rear house doors) fixed horizontally underneath the hen house door for them to fly up and land on. They then walked through the hanging metal chains into the hen house. This was recommended to me to keep foxes out if we were not around as it was too small and flexible for a fox to get on and the metal chains were another fox deterrent.

In the morning they stood on the footscraper and surveyed their run before flying off into the run. I always kept one wing clipped to prevent them flying off too far and it always worked for me.
