  • Chickens do catch Mice Eek

    Hi All,
My girls caught a mouse and were stopping all over it,they started pecking at it so we got it out.Not nice but they are only doing what comes naturally. Silly mouse shoul not have gone in their home. I cannot belive the amount of eggs they have given us, 19 days later of getting them and to date 48 eggs
I have bought some new bedding called Easybed, looks really good so i am going to give it a try at the weekend. Ginger led the wway to bed the other night when it was really cold. I was o pelased to see them all huddled up in there quarters. I have put vasaline on their combs just in case of frostbite and they just sat there and let me do it. What great animals they are

If you hadn't been there, they would probably have eaten the mouse. Chickens are NOT naturally vegetarian!
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

OH saw a mouse in the run night before last so bought some more traps. They are all set nicely with chocolate as are the rat and mice traps in the garage and shed. Haven't caught one yet though. ( I actually like mice but don't want to be over run with them)

Still haven't cought a mouse but OH sprung one of the traps last night and the chocolate shot into the run. Takes ages to find chocolate in the dark with a torch. Didn't want to risk girls getting it, in case it's poison to them like it is to dogs.

I'm not scared of Mice or Rats, (just heights and enclosed spaces!) and I hate killing anything ,myself (whimp!) but someone once told me that the little darlings don't have a sphincter muscle, therefore constantly 'dribble' urine as they go about their business - the thought of it all over our kitchen worktops put me off enough to make me get traps.

Yes, mice do dribble pee everywhere. This makes it easy for some predators to find them, as the pee is visible in ultra-violet light, and some creatures which hunt mice can see ultra-violet (eg kestrel, that is the one I know about, they hover looking for a trail that is growing.....)

My daughter was mortified when our 3 girls fought over a dead mouse. We tried to explain that worms slugs etc were no different but I dont think she will truly forgive them..... she does enjoy the eggs tho so maybe

Locked the girls up for the night and brought the food in as usual then went back out to check mice traps were baited. Chocolate has gone, nothing in the trap but the mouse was sat in the run looking at me! (I will try peanut butter as Linda suggested but forgot to buy it.)

Ours seem to enjoy frogs. and yes its can get rather yucky.
It is supprizing the amount of people who think chickens are vegetarians.

Oh and i catch mice in big bottles, lean them slightly to one side and put some food in the neck and down the bottle, once they get in they cant get out.
Then its the matter of just getting rid of it..................somewhere far far away in another galaxy

Being very fond of grape juice I get a lot of bottles. Will try this trick tonight.
                              Mine like frogs too.
