  • My first egg ( well 5 actually!)

Ok...so we were in England for a long weekend ...and a neighbour was feeding the cat and chooks...and I checked the nesting boxes on our return...and nothing

So today I decided to clean them out thoroughly ....hands and knees job with bum in air scraping out the shavings from under the nesting box shelf...and what did I find??????

    5 eggs!!!!

    Good little Betty *cuddles*

Going to blow the first one.....problem is don't know which one it was!!!!

So...she clearly prefers to commando crawl into a gap of 8" height to lay than use her nesting box!

    Guess what's for supper folks????

      Had a brain wave...

      *Sits down again*

First eggs are smaller aren't they????? Soooooooo....I've weighed them!!!!

      27g ; 29g ; 30g ; 30g ; 34g.......reckon the smallest is the first peeps???

I understand the average weight of an egg is about 60g- but these are pullets- so what do you reckon they will reach ???45g

Brill...so a bit of a way to go then for my little lass!

            All perfect shape too!!!

She was making quite a fuss after she'd laid this morning...think I may have a young cockerel- and tried to see which one was making the fuss - didn't get to see which one- but had no idea she'd started laying!!! The other point of lay doesn't look like she's quite ready yet.

Actually the gap is 6" high which she'd gone under!!!

Watch that on, she'll be doing a cross between the Great Eggscape and the Chicken Run, just don't give her a spoon

                Update...

9 eggs in 10 days- and still weighing in at 36g.
Looks like it was Bertha and not Betty after all!!!

                Thankyou Bertha!

We had one late afternoon, and the next day nothing and then there was a cold egg first thing the following morning- and then the following morning again( ie today)

She was part way through laying when I opened them up today...and the egg has a little hollow groove where she'd hung on for a sec to check it would be safe to finish laying

I've never held such a new egg...it was really warm!!!!
