  • I have eggs!!!!!!!

My big girl 'Skitty' has laid an egg for the past 2 days in a row.

I am so excited for her......The OH found them this morning.....I didn't see any last night but he said there was one under the nest box half cover by shavings and the other in the nest box.

I remember reading on here that they may be going into lay if they started crouching when you approached so I have been checking for about a week and the first morning I didn't go to let them out .....well there they were.

I know it is her that is laying them because six are to young and they other blackrock has shown no signs of laying and her comb is still pink. So when I cleaned out today she got a treat or six for being such a clever girl.

She was called Skitty because she always ran from us now she jumps on your lap and sits waiting for a fuss. This egg laying thing has such a strange effect on there personality.

Just had to share as I am so proud of her

    Congratulations!

I've only had my ex-batts two weeks today, and I know they're supposed to lay eggs and all that, but it's still so exciting when they do - and they do taste better than bought ones - even free-range bought ones.

I've had problems with egg-eating, so have doubled their feed ration, and closed the coop during the day, so they don't get tempted to all huddle inside and eat the produce. Don't worry, they've got shelter.

The best thing though, apart from the eggs, and the fact they've got more feathers now and look more like chickens, is the fact that they run over to the fence if I go anywhere near, and if I go in they all rush straight up to me and follow me around the pen going 'bok bok buerk' at me (whatever that means!) and peck at my feet.

Bit more space under my nest boxes (read the other thread) so mine are not quite so daring and compact. I don't even think they could get down to 6-8" if they tried they are quite big girls, some are even bigger than the 2 cockerals....

I just can't wait till all 6 girls start laying so I can share the eggs with the family next door who lost a chicken to a predator a couple of days ago.

          Congratulations!!!!

I am soooo jealous of your first eggs....I am still waiting for mine!! The girls are roughly 19 weeks now - they're crouching when you stroke them (and have been for about 2 weeks), but their little combs are still pale pink, and small!! I'm kinda thinking it'll be next Spring now, but I'm not giving up hope just yet!!!!

Shame about your neighbours....I would hate to lose any of my girls!! Sharing your eggs with them will be a nice touch!
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!
