I'd have said chicken wire too!!!

If you use plastic netting, all birds can land on it, squash it down and peck through the holes.
My OH has just finished putting chicken wire along the gates....and now considering making tunnels to put over the herb bed 18"x15' to keep them off before they get a taste for herbs!

I can't believe the devasation my lot have brought about in just two weeks, and I used to take such a pride in my garden. They're so lovely, though, and so intersted in life, that I really can't bring myself to do anything about it, although I will fence off the veg patch next year with chicken wire.

On the plus side, they've weeded the asparagus bed for me

I have some frames covered with chicken wire (rolls were quite cheap at ASDA in the gardening bit last year) that I use to keep pigeons off brassicas. I will use those around beds and crops I don't want savaging (when I get me birds, o'course!)
