Funny eggs!

I though you might like to see some eggs a couple of my chooks laid this week?

The wrinkly ones are from a 6 year old hen and the two toned one is from a 5 year old Marans which used to lay deep chocolate coloured eggs!

Very strange looking! Is there some kind of food deficiency, or is that old age in hens?

I'd say old age. The 'paint-spraying' process is a bit erratic at first and towards the end. And as chickens age, their whites become waterier, making it more difficult for the shell to form in its usual manner.

Dinosaur eggs, as kids call them. Wish I could get some from mine but they’re only a few years old so I might have a bit of a wait

Yup...Old age. We only get one a week max from each of those oldies but for some reason the wrinkly one s appeared 2 days apart.

The Marans are unusual in that they coat their eggs as the last bit of processing ,so , when freshly laid , you can smudge the colour off them.

Had one of my Black rocks lay an egg not much bigger than a marble yesterday. All the rest are normal.
Wish i could get some hens that laid pullet sized eggs all the time.

Try quails.
They lay several little eggs every day. We sometimes visit a mate who has a couple of quails and we end up with loads of eggs to take home.

We used to get 9 eggs a day from 8 quail
4 eggs equal one hens egg. They are supposed to be more nutritious from what I recall reading before we bought them.
A pain to peel hard boiled ones but they poach and fry in seconds and cook well in cakes. Great on pizzas too!

My wrinkly egg layer is still laying 2 eggs a week. All the rest have stopped.
