  • Spicing up chooks lives?

How does everyone who uses it add Poultry Spice to the chooks food?

I tried just sprinkling it on there layers pellets .....dry. I've also tried making a mash with bread, layers, spice and mixed corn mixed together with a bit of water and heated in a pan!
Do you have a favourite recipe? Must admit it smells rather nice.......a bit like a dodgy Ouso!

My girls favourite is porridge oats, made with water, and some poultry spice...all heated in a big pot. Sometimes they have it with fresh corn and peas - other times it's mixed fruit. They adore it...and have it every night before bed, when it's as cold as this.

I tried it in mash tatties, but they weren't keen!!! They like it on rice though -
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

Now you mention porridge oats, I used to be sent to the Co-Op (not coop!) when I was a kid for half a stone of crushed oats for the rabbits my Mum kept.
If I could get some from Jolleyes pet store (rabbit, guinee pig food?) they would probably be a damm site cheaper than Quaker porridge oats I would guess!

Asda or Tescos or Sainsbury's own brand porridge oats - about 40 - 50p a big bag (I think). I sprinkle the spice on whatever they're having in their "wet food dish". I think it smells lovely too It's got ginger and cinnamon in it as far as I can remember - feeling too lazy just now to go and get the container

I buy the tesco own oats - they are 50p for a kilo or something. It takes mine about 2 weeks to eat that up.

I HATE the smell of poultry spice - gives me the boak!!!

I sprinkle on pellets but I may try the porridge as well as an afternoon treat when I haven't any greens as an alternative to their mixed corn.

Water. shove a handful or so of oats into a biggish container, cover with water (doesn't matter if it's a bit too much) microwave for a couple of minutes to cook it, then mix it into some layers (or growers) pellets to a mushy mash. Leave it to cool down a bit before giving it to your chooks. Other stuff can be mixed in as well - cooked potato peelings, left over fruit, veg, medicine etc

I give my ex-bats a fairly crumbly mash each morning with Poultry Spice in it so that I know they.ve eaten it. Thought with the pellets might be a bit hit and miss.
