  • fox killed our girls

    Hi all,
not only did we lose Scraggs yesterday, but a fox got into the run and killed our four girls, there were no marks on them I think they must of died of fright.
My son was at home alone, and heard a noise and caught the critter in the act, and scared it off, but it was to late.

so now all the girls will be buried under the cherry tree together, which is next to their run.
No time today to get them out of their run and watch them charge about the garden and watch Blossom lay under her favorite tree.

we are all sad here today, but we gave them a few months of how their lives should have been from day one.

    thanks all

    Minxie

    Oh Minxie, that's awful.

Oh Minxie, that is such a shame - I lost bunnies to a stray dog, no mark on them either.

I hope there is some comfort in that they had a good life with you, and that you know what happened to them and know it was nothing that you did or didn't do.

It's something we all fear will happen minxie...I'm so sorry it has happened to you. Especially on the heels of Scraggs.

We have three foxes in the field behind us, and can regularly hear them calling. Ours free range and i won't put them out until late ( they're still in) and make sure they go to bed well before dusk (3.45ish uk time).
..I still wonder if it's just a matter of time though???
I understand rural foxes are a bit more timid over here( something to do with hunters shooting during daylight hours?)

As I said yesterday- you've given them freedom, love and attention which they well deserved- they'd have been killed ages ago if you hadn't rescued them.
Still- it's not nice for you.

What sad news Minxie. At least it was quick - not like the lingering hell in the battery cages. Sorry you are so sad. Remember the good things and the freedom you gave them.

What a bummer. Sorry to hear your news. As the others have said, at least your hens got a taste of what proper chicken life should be.

Maybe a bit early to ask but I will anyhoo ('tis my nature you see) - will you reinforce the run and get some more?
                      Happy Gardening,

Hugs sweety, foxes do have a way of killing off the birds and leaving no trace. We lost twenty in one day, yes in the day. We gave up in the end and decided to make war with the foxes which is why our chicken run is like fortknox. The wire is buried down at the bottom, at least three feet into the ground. The wire is 8ft high. We found out that foxes can jump fences of 5ft.
All we need is a mine field and some armed towers and we are there.

like the others have said, at least they all had a great life xxxxxx

So sorry to hear that... but as you say, at least they had a decent chance at a life before they died. Do you know where/how the fox got in?

Awful news, I do feel for you, how horrid. I echo what others have said. It's what all we chicken keepers dread (and now I'm having a worry about mine....)

                              ((((hugs))))
