  • It's the wolf, Its the wolf........

That was the perceived cry from my chooks when I tried to introduce them to my German Shepherd today! They were not best pleased as I approached the run with Amber in tow. They made one heck of a commotion as if they were being murdered and were trying to fly out the top of the 6 foot high pen (which luckily has mesh on top as well)
Poor Amber was a bit beguiled as well and I had to take her back to the bottom of the plot and lock her in the greenhouse whilst I administered to the chooks needs.
Six eggs today, sold as I came out of the run after breaking the ice on their water containers. I gave them an extra ration of mixed corn to keep them warm tonight.

It took Amber and I two hours to walk to the allotment on a nice sunny winters day. Half an hour at the allotment administering to chooks and lighting wood burning stove in greenhouse to thaw things out a bit.........and then a two hour trek home, getting home as the sun went down and the temp dropped.
Looking forward to a nice soak to relieve my blisters!

Perhaps you should bring Amber to meet my ex-batts. They don't seem to be scared of anything!

I bought them a 'dining canopy' (cheap Gazebo type thingy) as a shelter from the rain. I carried it over the fence into their run and placed it on the ground and they pounced on it. I wouldn't mind, but it's three metres square and covered in bright green and white stripes, and flapping in the wind!

The Gazebo thingy is a good idea............but are they meant for a northern winter I wonder????..........

My ex bats have spotted the human coop. I was ironing this morning when I heard an insistant pecking on the patio doors. I'm already bottom of the pecking order as I have a red scar on my leg which is now very red after my early morning visits to let them out whilst wearing a dressing gown.

Should I just give up now, put on the DVD of Chicken Run, and invite the four of them all to perch on the back of the sofa?

My hens wind the dogs up by purposely going up to the fence and fluffing their feathers, preening etc, then staring them in the face.

The dogs go mad, howl then head butt the fence (stock fence, release pen netting and chicken wire) whilst the chickens stand there totally unperturbed....

Unfortunately one of ours had a run in with Philly the GSD, that chook is now named Lucky because it was, intervened just in time this was only a couple of days after I got them. The gap in the gate was blocked immediately. Philly is our pheasant catcher and I knew she would treat the chooks the same
