  • Hmm, anyone got a small appetite?

Looks like one of our new Australorp hens has started laying - the egg on the right (from Flymo) for size reference is a small/medium

    Cute....

No baby possibility - no cockerel (too noisy in the garden)

The first egg or two from a pullet can be really small. Doesn't mean they always will!

That's so cute I think you should "blow" it and keep it forever, just as a reminder

We had a really ickle one when we had the bantams...I was convinced a quail must've ben visiting in the night.
If yours is anything like ours was on the edibility front.....I'd do as Maureen suggests & blow it & keep as a little reminder.

I gathered six of these with the intention of sticking them in an egg box for a joke and seeing if anyone actually bought them!

Then I thought " I've got my reputation to think about here and don't want to be accused of flogging budgie eggs".

In the end I broke them all open and none of them had a yolk so I mashed the albumen up with some layers pellets and fed them back to chooks. It's the only time I've ever given chooks eggs to eat as it goes against the grain a bit, even though it's recommended for poorly hens.

The eggshells weren't wasted either (very thick shells btw!) I put them on top of my woodburning stove and when they were really dry and cooked, broke them up and fed them back as grit as well!

Younger son wanted to fry it so he did. No yolk. He said it tasted odd and gave it to the dog
