  • Egg whites

Hiall, can someone help please? My girls are laying eggs still everyday but there seems to be a lot of white, sometimes really almost fluffy when cooked. The yolks are fine and they are healthy is this normal. I had one egg yesterday that weighed 2 and 3qurater ounces. Thye are eating their layers mash, porridge and treats in the afternoon but am i missing something.

We had eggs that were a bit watery in the summer. Only noticed it when we fried the eggs. I googled 'watery egg whites' and ended up thinking my girls had all sorts of diseases. Also read it could be due to something in the food or just that the hens were old. Funny thing is, the eggs are fine now.

I find that if you cook eggs very fresh the whites do tend to be frothy and difficult to peel if you're hard boiling them.
I talked to someone last week whose aunt had a "chicken farm" ie battery, in the days of the original Little lion which was supposed to mean the eggs were fresh. However the packers only collected the eggs from the farm once a fortnight! Says it all really!

i always leave my eggs (not in the fridge) for at least three days before i eat them to allow the whites to settle.

Thanks all, i thought it might be something to do with be really fresh bvut wasn't sure. I thought it might be something lackng in their food. Any suggestions with what vitamins to give them, just in case. The story about the lion eggs is awful, just goes to show you can't put all your trust in things....

If you go on the Omlet website it does say watery egg whites are more common in the summer and from old hens.

I give mine Poultry Spice in their morning mash specially in the winter or during moults. Or you can give Battle's Poultry Drink which is a vitamin booster too. Cider Apple Vinegar is the other thing you can put in their water. Your poultry feed supplier should stock all the above.
