We use a ceramic tile as the pop hole - foxy can't bite through that! You can use quite a heavy door - there is a weight limit on the instructions, we felt a heavy door would make it more likely to close smoothly without 'catching'.
Certainly not any less secure than a manual door.
You can open the door just by pulling up the nylon cord to shove a hen in! Although you will have another door on the house for cleaning etc which it might be easier to use.

I spoke to Simon - aka Wells Poultry - he was very helpful (ours is positioned under an overhang and I was worried there wouldn't be enough light)

    Tempted?

They sell metal doors as well, so that would be light and unchewable!

Oh yes, tempted! I just wanted to gain the advantage of other people's experience. Think I'm going for it. The house and additions are part of my 60th birthday present so I feel it's a great excuse to splash out!

I've got one as well, It's excellent even though it is not closing until it is so dark you need a torch to see which is worrying even though my lot have a 'leccie fence as well
