We got our first egg today! The look of wonder on my seven year old daughters face was priceless!! She loves those 3 chickens, i can't believe that they let her stroke them and feed out of her hand, I had no idea hens could be such great pets - a lot nicer than that horrid rabbit of ours!

Congratulations Petal,it's a lovely feeling, isn't it? Like a little miracle.
I know laying eggs is what hens do, but I still find myself saying "thank you, girls" every morning when I let them out and peer into the nest boxes for yesterday's haul. One of our girls tends to lay just as she wakes up, so quite often one of the eggs is still warm, and I walk back into the house carrying it as if it's precious treasure. Which it is, really.

Well done that chook and congratulations Petal!
I do similar to Hashette........after I've finished cleaning them out and they're being curious as always, I say "There you are now, a nice clean floor, comfey nesting boxes, fresh food, what more could you want? Thank you for todays eggs and lay me some more for tomorrow"............ And they do!
God help me if any of the allotment guys come past and heard me talking to the chooks..........they'd think I was nuts! And they do!Last edited by Snadger; 06-12-2008, 09:35 PM.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

I always thank my girls, only polite as they lay so well for me.
I am still amazed everyday when we poen the nestbox and there they are. I don't think that feeling ever leaves unless you are a battery hen farmer!
There were 4 of us trying to all get a pece of our first one!
